What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Salt
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Mild soap
  • Warm water
  • Iron

Steps to Remove Stains

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a bowl.
  2. Add a pinch of salt to mixture.
  3. Dab the mixture onto the stain with a soft cloth or sponge. Do not rub or scrub the fabric.
  4. Allow mixture to sit on the stain for a few minutes. Meanwhile, prepare a solution of mild soap and warm water.
  5. Rinse or blot the stain with the soapy water.
  6. If any stains remain, mix a new solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and dab remaining stain until it’s gone.
  7. To remove any remaining solution, dab the area with a damp cloth and then allow the garment to air dry.
  8. Once the garment is completely dry, press it with a clean, cool iron.

Tips and Tricks

  • Remove coffee and tea stains as soon as possible. Fresh stains are much easier to remove than old ones.
  • Always test the cleaning mixture on a small, unobtrusive area of the fabric before using it on an obvious spot.
  • Do not use hot water or harsh chemicals on silk taffeta.
  • To prevent future staining, avoid eating and drinking near garments made of silk taffeta.

Warnings

  • Never iron or steam silk taffeta while it's wet.
  • Be sure to read care instructions for each garment before attempting to clean it.
