How to Easily and Thoroughly Remove Coffee and Tea Stains from Silk

Whether it's a coffee spill on your favorite silk blouse or a tea stain on your favorite silk scarf, coffee and tea stains can be difficult to remove without proper knowledge. Fortunately, with a few simple steps you can easily and thoroughly clean these types of stains from silk without damaging the fabric.

What You'll Need

  • Water
  • Mild soap
  • Absorbent cloth
  • A few drops of mild laundry detergent
  • Rubbing alcohol

Steps for Cleaning Coffee and Tea Stains from Silk

  1. If the stain is still fresh, immediately rinse the area with cold water.
  2. Mix a solution of mild soap and warm water, then dip an absorbent cloth into mixture and gently blot at stain.
  3. Once the stain has been removed by the soapy water, rinse the area with cold water.
  4. Mix a solution of mild laundry detergent and warm water, then dip an absorbent cloth into the mixture and gently blot at stain. Note: Do not rub the silk fabric as this may cause further damage.
  5. Once the stain has been removed by laundry detergent, rinse the area with cold water.
  6. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol directly to the stain and allow it to sit for several minutes.
  7. Rinse the area with cold water and repeat the process until the stain is gone.
  8. Allow area to air dry.

Notes

  • Always test any cleaning solutions on a hidden area of the fabric first to ensure that the fabric doesn't fade or become damaged.
  • Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly after each cleaning method to ensure all of the cleaning solutions are removed.
