Whether it's a cherished wedding dress, suit for the office, or something special for a night out, we want our clothes to look their best. Unfortunately, accidents can happen. Coffee and tea spills made on formalwear can be tricky to clean, but don’t worry-- it’s still possible to make that garment look like new again.
Immediately upon spilling coffee or tea onto your clothing, dab stain with a soft cloth, paper towel, or sponge. Avoid rubbing too much as you might spread the stain. If possible, rinse the stain with cold water while still at the scene. This can help you avoid the stain from setting in further.
If you are unable to rinse the stain right away, or it doesn’t seem to have budged, you can use a pre-treatment with soap and water before laundering. Rub a small amount of mild soap (such as dish soap) into the stain, then dab it with a wet cloth. Launder according to clothing care instructions and as soon as possible.
If the stain persists after laundering, try using a solvent such as white vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Test the solution on a hidden part of the clothing first to make sure it won’t cause color fading or other damage. Once it’s been tested, apply the solution to the stain and let it soak in for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off.
If the stain is still present, there are several laundry-safe stain removers available to try. You can purchase them from most grocery stores, and they come in spray, liquid, and powder form. Follow product directions to apply to the stain, allow it to sit, and then launder.
Now you’re equipped with what you need to know about removing coffee and tea stains from formalwear. You’ll be able to clean up any mess and look your best in no time.
