Before cleaning any item, make sure to check the care tag and determine if it's safe to hand wash. If it is, pre-treat any stains by soaking the material in an enzyme presoak liquid detergent. These specially formulated products are designed to break down proteins and organic stains like tea and coffee. Let soak for 15-30 minutes and then follow with a regular cycle in cold water.
If you don't have an enzyme pre-soak on hand, you can use other items you may already have in your pantry. For instance, try applying a paste of baking soda and water to stain. Dab a terry cloth with lemon juice or vinegar and gently rub it over stained areas. Or, make a mixture of dishwashing liquid and hydrogen peroxide and put it directly on top of the spots.
After pre-treating or using a home remedy, rinse with cold water and give it a gentle scrub with a soft bristle brush. This will help to loosen up any remaining bits. Rinse the item again and, if necessary, repeat pre-treating and scrubbing until stains are completely gone.
If spot persists, create a thicker paste with the baking soda and water and spread it over the stain, then let it dry until it becomes brittle. Moisten the area with cold water and then use a soft brush to remove the paste. After this, launder the item according to the care label directions.
Be sure to perform a spot test before using any of the methods above on any fabric. This will ensure that no damage or discoloration occurs.
