Using a Vacuum Cleaner or Carpet Cleaner

If you have access to a vacuum cleaner or carpet cleaner that’s suitable for area rugs, use it right away. Doing so will help to remove any excess liquid and prevent stain from setting in. Be sure to use low suction and avoid brushing too hard, as this could damage the fibers of the rug.

Clean the Stain with Soap and Water

Mix some mild dish soap and lukewarm water in a bowl or container. Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the mixture and gently blot the stain. Make sure to use a damp cloth only, as rubbing a dry cloth against the stain might cause it to become permanent. Continue blotting until the stain is gone, then rinse the affected area with clean, cold water.

Tackle the Stain with Vinegar and Baking Soda

If the stain proves to be stubborn, try using vinegar and baking soda. Make a paste by combining equal parts of vinegar and baking soda in a small bowl and apply it to the stained area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a soft cloth. Once you’ve removed the stain, rinse affected area with cold water.

Commercial Spot Remover

If all else fails, there are several commercial spot removers available on the market. Be sure to read the instructions carefully before using them on your area rug. If the product is safe for use on rugs, apply it according to the package directions and follow up with a good rinse.

Dry the Area Rug

Once you’ve finished cleaning the stain, make sure to thoroughly dry the area rug. You can do this with a cloth or with a fan set on low. Never place your area rug in the dryer, as this could damage the fibers.

Prevent Future Stains

To help prevent future spills and stains, consider placing a rug pad underneath your area rug. Not only will this provide extra cushioning, but it will also help protect your area rug from wear and tear.
