What You'll Need

  • Dish soap or detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Scrub brush
  • Baking soda
  • Soft cloth or sponge

Step 1: Soak the Stain

To begin, mix a solution of one tablespoon of dish soap or detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar in one cup of cool water. Submerge the stained area of the gingham fabric in the solution for about 15 minutes. If stain is very large, you can double or triple the solution ingredients.

Step 2: Scrub Stain

Once the fabric has soaked in the solution, gently agitate the stained area with a scrub brush. This should help to break up the chocolate and lift the stain from the fabric.

Step 3: Rinse Fabric

Rinse the fabric under cold running water, making sure to remove all traces of the solution. It is important to use cold water here, as hot water can cause chocolate stains to set.

Step 4: Apply Baking Soda Paste

Mix together one teaspoon of baking soda and two teaspoons of cold water to create a paste. Take a soft cloth or sponge and rub the paste into the stained area. Be sure to rub in a circular motion to get the baking soda into all of the creases and small details of the gingham fabric.

Step 5: Launder the Fabric

Launder fabric according to the care instructions on the label. You can add a scoop of white vinegar to the wash if needed to help remove any remaining odors.
