When it comes to cleaning chocolate stains, the sooner you get started, the better. Fresh stains are much easier to remove than those that have been sitting around for days or weeks. Before you start, make sure to check the tags on your coat to ensure that the fabric can be safely cleaned.

Step One: Remove Any Excess Chocolate

Start by gently scraping away any excess chocolate from fabric using a spoon or dull knife. Take care not to rub the stain further into the fabric during this process.

Step Two: Handwash the Stained Area

Fill a large bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Submerge the stained area and gently massage fabric for several minutes. Consider using an abrasive sponge or brush for caked-on stains. Once you are done, use cold water to rinse the soap off of the fabric.

Step Three: Apply a Stain Remover

To give yourself the best possible chance of removing the stain, consider applying a pre-treating agent before laundering. Rub cleaner into the fabric and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before washing.

Step Four: Wash in Cold Water

Place the garment in the washing machine with a cold water cycle and a gentle detergent. Check the tag on the coat again to ensure that the detergent is appropriate for the fabric. To prevent the stain from setting in, avoid drying the garment before the stain is completely removed.
