Create a Detergent Solution

If toy is made of fabric, begin by creating a detergent solution. Combine a teaspoon each of bleach-free dish soap and hydrogen peroxide with about two cups of cold water. Submerge the affected toy in mixture for no more than 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Use Ammonia

For toys that can’t be safely placed in water, try using an ammonia solution. Mix one tablespoon of clear ammonia into a cup of water and use a soft cloth to apply it directly to stain. Gently wipe the area clean and rinse it with a damp cloth.

Feeling Lazy? Try a Commercial Stain Remover

If you don’t have the time or energy to make your own solutions, commercial stain removers are a great option. Look for one that’s specifically made for removing blood stains and read the instructions carefully before use. Most will require you to spray the product directly onto the stain and then launder or scrub away residue.

Stain Removal Tips

  • It’s important to act quickly and treat the stain as soon as possible.
  • Test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the toy before treating entire stain.
  • Never use a washing machine or dryer to clean blood-stained toys, as the heat may cause the stain to set permanently.
