Blood stains don't have to spell the end for your favorite ties! It's quite easy to remove bloodstains from clothing items like ties. All you need is a few cleaning supplies that you probably already have at home.

What You'll Need

  • Cold water
  • Mild detergent (or liquid laundry detergent)
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • A toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush

Instructions

  1. Start by soaking the tie in cold water for 15-30 minutes. Make sure you soak the tie only, not the lining.
  2. Mix one teaspoon mild detergent with two cups of cold water.
  3. Use a soft-bristled brush or toothbrush to gently scrub the blood stain with the detergent solution.
  4. Rinse with cold water, and repeat if necessary.
  5. If the stain remains, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with one cup of cold water and use the brush to apply the mixture to stained area.
  6. Once the vinegar solution has been applied, rinse the tie with cold water again.
  7. If the stain still won't budge, try applying a mixture of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Allow the mixture to sit on the stain for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with cold water and let the tie air dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always test a small area of the tie first to ensure the cleaning products won't damage the fabric.
  • Be gentle when scrubbing so that you don't damage the fabric.
  • Don't use hot water, as this can cause the blood stain to set.
  • Don't put the tie in the dryer until the stain is gone – this may set the stain even further.
