Removing a Fresh Blood Stain

If your blood stain is still fresh and has not yet dried, the first step is to rinse it with cold water. Cold water helps prevent the blood from setting into the fabric and keeps particles from sinking even deeper into fabric. You can then lightly scrub the area with a soft brush or cloth to lift any residue away. If some of the stain remains, take a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and gently rub it onto the spot. Rinse the soap off with cold water and then dab the area with a clean cloth until dry.

Getting Rid of an Old Blood Stain

If your blood stain is already dried on and set into the fabric, you'll need to begin by soaking the socks in cold water with a bit of laundry detergent for at least half an hour. This will help loosen the particles from the fabric fibers. Next, you can use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently rub the stain, taking care to scrub the area lightly. After, blot spot with a paper towel or a clean cloth until all the liquid is absorbed. Finally, rinse the socks thoroughly in cold water once more and allow them to air-dry completely.

Additional Tips

  • For tougher stains, you may have to repeat the process several times before all the color is removed.
  • Using rubbing alcohol might speed up the process, although be careful not to accidentally bleach the fabric.
  • Avoid using hot water as heat can cause the blood to permanently set into the fabric.
  • Never put the socks in the dryer before the stain is fully removed as this can make it impossible to get out.
