Gather Supplies
Before you start, make sure you have the following supplies on hand:
- White vinegar
- Salt
- Cold water
- Lemon juice
- Borax
- Liquid detergent
- Paper towels
Removing Fresh Blood Stains
If the blood stain is fresh, then you should act right away. Follow these steps to stop the stain from setting into fabric:
- Blot the stain using a paper towel. Try not to rub the stain and instead press paper towel against the stain to absorb as much of the blood as possible.
- Mix one teaspoon of salt into one cup of cold water.
- Dip a cloth into the solution and dab the stained area to dilute the blood. Rinse out cloth and repeat until stain is gone.
- If stain persists, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of cold water. Dab stained area with a cloth and rinse the cloth with cold water.
- If the stain still remains, mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with one cup of cold water. Dab stained area with a cloth and rinse the cloth with cold water.
- For last resort option, mix one tablespoon of borax and one tablespoon of liquid detergent in one quart of cold water and submerge stained area for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
Removing Dried Blood Stains
If the blood stain has dried, then you'll need to work a bit harder to remove it. Here are the steps you should take:
- Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar into two cups of cold water.
- Dip a cloth into the mixture and dab the stained area to dissolve the dried blood.
- Rinse off the cloth and repeat until stain is no longer visible.
- If stain still remains, mix one tablespoon of lemon juice into one cup of cold water.
- Dab the stained area with a cloth and rinse the cloth with cold water.
- For last resort option, mix one tablespoon of borax and one tablespoon of liquid detergent in one quart of cold water and submerge stained area for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
Additional Tips
- Always test any cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of the fabric before using it on the stain. This will help ensure that the solution does not damage the fabric.
- Try to avoid using hot water as this can set the stain into the fabric.
- Never rub the stain as this can spread it and make it harder to remove.
- Once the stain is removed, rinse area with cool water and blot dry with a paper towel.
