No one wants stained clothes, especially when stain is from blood. Fortunately, removing a blood stain from your shirt doesn't have to be a stressful experience. With right materials and method, getting out that pesky stain can be simple and fast.

Steps for Cleaning Blood Stains from Your Shirt

  1. Soak the stained area with cold water or club soda as soon as you can.
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with 2 cups of cool water.
  3. Take an old toothbrush and dab the mixture onto the stained area.
  4. Rinse the stained area with cool water.
  5. If the stain persists, mix ½ teaspoon of ammonia with 1 cup of warm water.
  6. Dab the ammonia solution onto the stain, then rinse it out with cold water.
  7. If the stain still remains, cover the area with a paste made with equal parts salt and white vinegar.
  8. Let the paste sit on the stain for 1-2 hours.
  9. Rinse the paste out with cold water, then launder shirt as usual.

Tips

  • For best results, try to remove a blood stain as soon as possible to avoid letting it set in.
  • When applying the detergent or ammonia solution, gently scrub the stained area with an old toothbrush.
  • If you’re dealing with a dry-clean only article of clothing, take it to a professional cleaner.
