Method 1: Soak in Cold Water

If the blood stain is still wet, always start with cold water. Fill a basin with cold water and add mild liquid detergent. Soak the item for 10 to 20 minutes before washing as normal. If the stain is on a delicate fabric like wool, cashmere or silk, hand wash the garment instead.

Method 2: Use Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a non-chlorinated oxidizing agent used for whitening and disinfecting. To apply it as a spot cleaner on blood stains, pour a small amount of hydrogen peroxide directly onto the soiled area, and then wash as usual. It is important to note here that hydrogen peroxide isn't suitable for colours, so always test on an inconspicuous area before applying to the stain.

Method 3: Try a Saline Solution

If the hydrogen peroxide isn’t working, or you’re dealing with a colourfast fabric, you can also try using a saline solution. Dissolve around two tablespoons of salt into one cup of water, and dab the mixture onto the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes before washing as normal.

Method 4: Use Dish Detergent

If you don't have hydrogen peroxide or a saline solution readily available, you can also make use of your everyday dishwashing soap. Dab a little of the detergent onto soiled area and rub it gently into the material. Rinse with cool water afterwards, and repeat until stain has disappeared. You should also always remember to check the care label on garment before trying this method.

Conclusion

No matter how careful you are, accidents do happen and a blood stain on your favourite jumper can be daunting. With the right method and some patience though, you might just be able to get your jumper looking brand new again. Whether it be soaking in cold water, applying hydrogen peroxide or dish detergent, we hope these tips help you out!
