Step 1: Blot the Stain

Before you attempt to remove the blood stain, use a cloth or paper towel to blot the area. This will help remove as much of the blood as possible before you start to treat the stain. Be sure not to scrub too hard or you could end up spreading the stain.

Step 2: Soak with Cold Water

Once you’ve removed as much of the blood as possible by blotting, fill a sink or bowl with cold water and submerge the part of the flannel where the stain is. If the stain still remains after a few minutes, add a few teaspoons of laundry detergent and allow it to soak for a few more hours.

Step 3: Apply a Pre-Treat Solution

If the stain still doesn’t come out after soaking, apply a pre-treat solution onto affected area. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes before washing the item as usual.

Step 4: Check the Stain Again After Washing

Once you’ve washed the item, check for any remaining stains. If there are still some traces, repeat steps 2-4 until all of the stains are gone.

Tips for Cleaning Blood Stains from Flannel

  • Be sure to use cold water when treating the stain, hot water may cause the stain to set in.
  • Never use bleach directly on the fabric as this could cause fading or discoloration.
  • If the stain is old, you may need to let the item soak overnight.
