Whether you got a papercut while working with jeans or you knocked your nose while wearing a jean jacket, blood stains on denim can be pesky and hard to remove. Blood is protein-based, so it can be a tricky stain to treat. However, if you act quickly you may be able to get rid of the offending stain. Here are some tried and true methods for removing blood from denim.
This method is good for removing light stains, though it may not completely eliminate heavier ones. Begin by soaking stained area in cold water as quickly as possible to prevent the stain from setting. Then, combine two tablespoons of salt with one quart of warm water. Soak the material in the solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with clean water and check the stain. If it's still there, repeat process until the stain is gone.
For tougher stains, you'll need some laundry detergent. Apply a non-bleaching detergent directly to the bloodstain and rub it into fabric. Let the detergent sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water. If the stain still remains, repeat the process as necessary. Be careful to not use too much detergent as it can damage your denim.
Enzyme pre-soaks and cleaners are a great way to break down protein-based stains. Apply the cleaner directly to the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, launder the garment as usual. If the stain persists, repeat the process until the stain is gone.
If all else fails, you can try using bleach. This should only be used on white denim. Mix one tablespoon of bleach with four cups of water and apply the mixture directly to the bloodstain. Let the bleach sit for a few minutes and then wipe away. Launder your garment and inspect stain. If it's still there, repeat process until the stain is removed.
Now that you know how to remove blood stains from denim, it's important to take preventive steps to avoid future stains. Always be mindful of where your fabrics are and what you're doing around them. If you are ever injured, be sure to remove your clothing and treat the wound as soon as possible to prevent the stain from setting in.
