The simplest way to clean a cutting board is with soap and water. Start by rinsing it with warm water, then scrub it with mild dishwashing liquid. Rinse the soap off and use an old toothbrush if necessary to scour the surface of the cutting board. Let it dry completely before you put it away.
If soap and water aren’t enough to get rid of stubborn blood stains, try using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Mix equal parts of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together in a cup. The mixture should be slightly runny, so add a bit more peroxide if necessary. Spread paste onto the stained areas and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth. Rinse the cutting board and let it air dry.
While soap and water or baking soda and peroxide are excellent cleaning agents, other things such as white vinegar, lemon juice, and rubbing alcohol can also be effective. Simply apply a small amount of one of these agents to a sponge or cloth and scrub stain until it is gone. Be sure to rinse the board with warm water afterwards.
In order to keep your cutting board looking like new, there are a few simple things you can do. First, try to avoid cutting raw meats on the board. Whenever possible, designate a separate board for raw meats and use one for fruits and vegetables. Second, after each use, be sure to wash the board with warm, soapy water and let it dry completely. Finally, keep the board well-oiled to prevent cracking or warping.
Blood stains on a cutting board can be hard to remove, but there are many effective methods that can help. Whether it's soap and water, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, or one of the other cleaning agents listed above, you can easily say goodbye to those pesky stains.
