What You'll Need to Get Started

  • Cold water
  • White vinegar
  • Non-chlorine bleach
  • Baking soda
  • Dish soap
  • Cleaning sponge or rag

Step 1: Blotting

Start by blotting the stained area with a clean, damp cloth, using cold water. This helps to loosen the dried blood, as well as dilute it. Never rub the stain, as this may cause it to spread.

Step 2: Create a Cleaning Solution

Mix equal parts cold water and white vinegar in a bowl. After the mixture is combined, dip a clean, soft cloth into it and apply it to the stained area of the fabric. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Use Non-Chlorine Bleach

After letting the vinegar-water solution sit for 10 minutes, pour a small amount of non-chlorine bleach onto a cleaning sponge or rag. Gently rub the fabric with the cloth or sponge. Allow it to sit for five minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 4: Apply Baking Soda

Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of dish soap and water. Apply it to the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, rinse with cold water and allow the fabric to air dry.

Keep Stain Away for Good

To help prevent blood stains from returning, always launder garments that come in contact with blood using cold water and powdered detergent, such as an enzyme-based soap. Additionally, avoid using hot water as this can cause blood stains to set into the fabric.
