We don’t always intend for our coats to get stained, but it’s an inevitability at some point. Whether it’s from a nosebleed or an accident, blood stains can be a stubborn presence. But fear not - there are a number of ways to tackle this task.

The type of fabric your coat is made of is important in determining the best cleaning method. If your coat is made of natural materials such as cotton, linen, or wool, then you will have different instructions on how to clean it.

For Cotton and Linen Coats

If your coat is made of cotton or linen, the first step is to give it a rinse under cold water. This should help loosen any dried blood although it won’t remove it completely. A few drops of mild detergent can be added to water. Don’t use anything too harsh.

Once garment has been gently soaked, remove it from water and press a cloth – preferably one that’s also been soaked in detergent – on the stain. Gently rub the cloth to lift the blood away. This shouldn’t be too vigorous so as not to damage the fabric. It may be necessary to repeat this process a few times before the stain is gone.

For Wool Coats

When dealing with wool coats, same basic approach applies. However, the detergent should be wool-safe. Furthermore, rinsing and rubbing should be done very gently. For this reason, taking it to a professional dry cleaner might be a better option – especially if the coat is valuable.

General Tips

Finally, there are some universal tips to bear in mind. Firstly, never use hot water on blood stains as this may set them, making them almost impossible to remove. Secondly, never rub the stain as this could cause permanent damage. And finally, if the stain is proving difficult to get rid of, try using a little white vinegar. Simply apply it to the area using a cloth and then rinse off with cold water.
