Start by blotting the affected area of the rug with a clean cloth using a dabbing motion. Work from the outside in to prevent spreading the stain further. Do not scrub or rub the area as this will further set the stain. After you’ve blotted up much of the excess blood, make a cleaning solution of 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and one cup of warm water.

Using a clean cloth, saturate the stain with the cleaning solution and again, use a blotting motion to absorb the stain. Rinse the cloth regularly and change it when it gets too dirty. Continue blotting until most of stain is gone. Once stain has been removed, rinse the area with cold water and then dry it with a towel. Finally, vacuum the area to fluff up the fibers and restore the rug.

If these steps don’t work, you may need to seek professional help. Dry cleaning or steam cleaning is often the best way to get out tough stains, especially on older rugs. Be sure to check care label on rug before attempting any further cleaning.
