Step 1: Sponge the Stain with Cold Water

Start by sponging bloodstain with cold water. This will help to dilute the stain and may remove some of it. After sponging, blot area with a clean cloth or towel to soak up any excess liquid. Do not rub the area, as this could cause the stain to spread.

Step 2: Apply Detergent

Next, apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stain. You can use regular laundry detergent or a product specifically made for treating stains. Gently rub the detergent into the stain and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. This will give the detergent time to penetrate the fibers and break down blood.

Step 3: Rinse With Cold Water

Once the detergent has had time to work, rinse area with cold water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all residue from the detergent.

Step 4: Repeat as Necessary

If the stain is still present, repeat steps 2 and 3 until it is no longer visible. Be sure to check the care instructions on the tag before laundering and drying garment.

Additional Tips

  • Always pretreat stains with a liquid detergent, not a powdered one or a spray.
  • If the stain is particularly stubborn, try soaking it in a mixture of detergent and cold water before laundering.
  • Be sure to follow the care instructions on the garment label when laundering.
  • When machine washing, use cold water setting and a gentle cycle.
