What You'll Need

To remove berry stains from wool, you’ll need:

  • Cold water
  • Mild detergent/soap
  • White vinegar
  • Oxygen-based bleach
  • Small scrub brush

Step 1: Rinse the Stain

Gently rinse the stain with cold water until it’s no longer visible. Be sure to take care not to rub the wool too hard — steam or heat can cause a wool garment to shrink.

Step 2: Apply Detergent/Soap

Create a mild solution of liquid detergent or soap and cold water, and gently dab it onto the stain. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes, then rinse.

Step 3: Reapply Soap/Detergent

If the stain persists after rinsing, create a fresh solution of liquid detergent or soap and cold water and repeat Step 2. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes, then rinse.

Step 4: Apply White Vinegar

If stain is still visible after repeating Step 2, pour white vinegar onto the spot. Allow it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse.

Step 5: Soak in Oxygen-Based Bleach

For tougher stains, soak the area in oxygen-based bleach and cold water for 20 minutes. Rinse, then inspect for signs of discoloration.

Step 6: Dry and Brush

Once the stain is gone, lay the item flat and allow it to air dry. Once dry, brush the area to restore the wool fibers back to their original condition.
