Step 1: Rinse with Cold Water

Rinse the stained area of the fabric with cold water as soon as possible. This will help to dilute the stain and make it easier to remove. You should avoid hot or warm water, however, since high temperatures are more likely to set the stain.

Step 2: Pre-Treat Stain

Using a mild detergent, like laundry soap or a dish soap, pre-treat the stain. Start by gently blotting the stain with a cloth dampened in detergent and cold water. Make sure to start on the outer edges of the stain and work your way towards the center so as not to spread it. Then, let the detergent sit on the stain for about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Look for Colorfastness

Place a white cloth under the stained area and then test a small, hidden corner of the fabric for colorfastness. To do this, dab it with a cloth dampened with cold water. If the color transfers onto the cloth, then the fabric is not colorfast and the heat from laundering could cause the stain to become permanent. If it doesn't transfer, then proceed to laundering.

Step 4: Wash Piece of Fabric

Set the washer to the gentle cycle. Make sure to use only cold water and a mild detergent. Add oxygen bleach (if safe for the fabric) to help lift the stain. It's best to removes the fabric from the washer as soon as the cycle has ended and to hang dry. DO NOT place the fabric in dryer, as heat will set any remaining stain.

Step 5: Repeat if Necessary

Inspect the fabric after it has been laundered. If the stain remains, then repeat steps 2-4 until the stain is removed.

Additional Tip

If you aren’t able to get all of the stain out, then take the fabric to a professional dry cleaner. They will be able to safely remove the stain without damaging fabric.
