When you're out picking and eating berries, you might expect a few stains here and there. But just because a berry stain gets on your clothing doesn't mean you have to throw away or replace the garment! You just have to know how to properly clean and treat the stain. Follow the steps below to efficiently remove the stubborn berry stains.

Step 1: Pre-Treat

Before you begin any washing process, the first step is to pre-treat the stain with a stain remover and cold water. If possible, use a product that contains enzymes and a surfactant, both of which help break down berry stains. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions on the package and remember to never use hot water to pre-treat a stain.

Step 2: Soak

After pre-treating the stain, you should let the item soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes. During this time, you can add detergent to the water to help break down berry stain further. Make sure the water is cold only, as hot water can set the stain and make it more difficult to remove.

Step 3: Washing Machine

Once you've pre-treated and soaked the garment, you are ready to wash it in washing machine. Set washing machine to the coldest setting and add the garment, along with other items that do not need special care. Do not add fabric softener or chlorine bleach, as these could cause additional staining. Also be sure to never put the item in the dryer until all of the berry stain has been removed.

Step 4: Spot-Clean & Repeat

Once you take garment out of the washer, be sure to spot-clean any remaining berry stains. You can use a liquid detergent or a paste made from equal parts detergent and dishwashing liquid. Apply the paste directly to the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water. If there is still some berry stain visible, repeat the soaking, pre-treating, and spot-cleaning process until the stain is completely gone.

Conclusion

With a little bit of elbow grease and the right techniques, you can easily remove berry stains from your clothing and save them from needing replacement. Whether you've been berry picking or simply enjoying some fruit, these steps will ensure your clothing remains pristine and stain-free.
