If possible, remove any excess stain before beginning the cleaning process. For example, if the berry spill is still wet, use a paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then, gently brush the area of the stain with an old toothbrush to break up any particles of dirt or food.
Mix a mild soap solution that is specifically designed for fabrics. This could be a dish soap, laundry detergent, or castile soap. Add a small amount of solution to a cloth and dab it onto stained area. Use gentle, circular motions to massage the soapy mixture into the fabric fibers. Continue for about 30 seconds, then rinse area thoroughly with cold water.
If the stain persists, sprinkle some baking soda lightly over the affected area and add a few drops of water. Mix the baking soda and water together until it forms a paste. Leave the paste on the stained area for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. Repeat this step if necessary.
Once stain has been removed, the shoe can either be air dried or machine washed depending on the material of the shoe. If air drying, make sure to do it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. It is important not to put the shoes in dryer as this could cause the stain to set in deeper.
For machine washing, fasten all zippers and butons, then place the shoes in a mesh laundry bag and wash on the gentle cycle with cold water. Use a mild detergent and no fabric softener. Once finished, air dry the shoes in a cool, well-ventilated area.
