Start by taking a clean, non-colored paper towel and pressing it onto the stain. This will help to absorb some of the excess liquid and prevent it from spreading. Be sure to avoid scrubbing because this can actually damage fabric.
Now that you've absorbed some of the liquid, you can start spot-treating the stained area with detergent. Apply a small amount of the detergent to a damp cloth and gently rub it into stain. Doing this will help to break down the stain and make it easier to remove.
Once you've pre-treated the stain, it's time to put your hat in the washing machine. Make sure to use cold water and a gentle cycle. If possible, add a stain-removal product to the cycle. If the stain persists, repeat step 2 before running hat through another cycle.
When cycle is done, it's important to let the hat air-dry. Avoid putting it in the dryer, as heat can cause fabrics to shrink and damage them further. Once the hat is completely dry, inspect the area to ensure the stain has been removed. And voilà — your hat is looking good as new.
