Cleaning Up: How to Remove Berry Stains from Your Hanbok

Berries are an incredibly delicious fruit. However, when they come into contact with your cherished Hanbok, they can cause some pretty stubborn stains! Don't fret just yet, though - there are plenty of ways to ensure that those pesky berry stains don't permanently ruin your Korean traditional dress.

Step 1: Soak the Stain with Vinegar

Start by soaking the stained area with a solution of white vinegar and cold water. Use equal parts of each. Let the material soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse the spot with cold water. For tougher stains, use a soft-bristled brush and gently scrub the spot.

Step 2: Apply a Baking Soda Paste

Mix three tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste to the stained area and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Take a damp cloth and lightly dab away the paste, using a gentle circular motion. Then, rinse the area with cold water.

Step 3: Place the Hanbok in Cold Water

Fill a sink or basin with cold, clean water and add 1/4 cup of laundry detergent and two cups of white vinegar (for a large load). Submerge the Hanbok and let it soak for up to 30 minutes. Gently swish the material around to help loosen stain. Rinse and hang it up to dry.

Additional Tips

  • Be sure to check the care label on your Hanbok before you attempt any of these methods.
  • If stain remains after these steps, it is best to have the garment professionally cleaned.
  • It is best to act as quickly as possible when removing berry stains, as longer they sit, the harder it will be to remove them.
