For colorfast fabric backpacks, first use a spoon or dull knife to scrape off any excess berry matter. Then create a cleaning solution by combining 1 teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap with 1 quart of warm water. Apply the solution to the stain using a clean cloth. Rinse the area with warm water, let it air dry, then check to see if the stain is gone. If the stain remains, create a paste by mixing 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts baking soda. Apply the paste to the stain and allow it to sit for 10 minutes or until dry. Brush off the paste with a dry cloth and rinse with cold water. Repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.
If your backpack is made of non-colorfast fabric (meaning the fabric may fade or discolor with regular laundering or cleaning), start by taking the backpack to a professional cleaner for spot treatment. Explain to the cleaner exactly what kind of stain you're dealing with so they know how to proceed. In general, a wool-safe detergent is a safe bet for delicate fabrics that may be prone to fading.
To prevent future berry stains from forming on your backpack, try to limit what you store in the pockets. Keep juice boxes, containers with berry matter, or anything else that might cause a stain in a separate container or bag. Also, be sure to wash your backpack regularly to help keep it clean. This will make it much easier to get berry stains out when they do occur.
