The best way to clean a barbecue sauce stain depends on the fabric type of your shirt. For example, if you have a cotton shirt, you could try using a detergent designed for getting out tough stains, like Tide or OxiClean. First, pre-treat the stain with the detergent, then wash garment in the warmest water it can handle.

If your t-shirt is made of a synthetic fabric such as polyester or nylon, pre-treating with rubbing alcohol may be your best bet. Apply the alcohol directly to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes before blotting it with a clean, white cloth. Then, launder garment as usual.

When washing any barbecue sauce-stained clothes, be sure to use cold water and set the laundry machine to gentlest cycle possible. You’ll also want to avoid using chlorine bleach on the garment, as this can set the stain into fabric fibers and make it even harder to remove.

For tough, lingering stains, try mixing equal parts dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Apply the mixture to the stained area and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing as usual. After treating the t-shirt with the cleaning solution, run it through a cold-water rinse cycle twice to make sure all the cleaner is removed.

If stain persists, you may need to take additional steps such as using a stain remover, soaking the garment in a vinegar and water mixture, or having it professionally cleaned. However, following the tips above should help rid your t-shirt of that pesky barbecue sauce stain.
