Step 1: Blot Away Excess Sauce

The first step to removing a BBQ sauce stain is to absorb as much of the sauce as possible. Take a paper towel or clean cloth, and lightly press down on the stain. The goal is to absorb as much of the sauce as possible without pressing too hard and pushing sauce deeper into the fabric.

Step 2: Make a Soap Solution

Next, mix up a solution of warm water and liquid detergent in an old bowl. Working from outside of stain inward, lightly blot the mixture onto the sauce. Again, you want to make sure to be gentle when rubbing the fabric, as you don’t want to spread the stain.

Step 3: Rinse Away Soap Solution

Once you’ve blotted away soap solution, rinse the area with fresh water. To prevent the stain from setting into the fabric, work as quickly as possible.

Step 4: Clean with Vinegar

If the stain is still visible after the soap solution, create a vinegar mixture using 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to dab the mixture onto the stain, all the way to edges. Once you’re done, rinse the area with warm water.

Step 5: Spot Test Before Using Detergent

If the BBQ sauce stain is still visible, try a light application of color-safe detergent. Before applying to stain, do a small spot test to make sure your detergent won’t discolor or damage fabric. If everything looks good, launder fabric as usual. Hang to dry.
