If you’ve got yourself into a sticky situation, act quickly! As soon as you can, start pretreating the stain with a solution made from one part white vinegar and two parts water. Drop a bit of the mixture onto the affected area and rub it gently. This should help the stain to loosen up, so it’s easier to deal with further down the line.
Once you’ve pretreated the stain, put the garment into a sink filled with lukewarm water and some detergent. Leave the shearling to soak for around 10 minutes, then rinse it in cold water. After rinsing, you might find that the stain is still present, so you may need to repeat this process once more to ensure it completely disappears.
If stain persists, it’s time to break out the ammonia. Remember to be careful when handling this product, as it is highly toxic. Start by mixing one part ammonia to three parts water and soaking the shearling for a few minutes. Next, dampen a cloth with the ammonia solution and rub the stained spot. Do this until the dirt has vanished.
Once you’re satisfied that stain has disappeared, give the shearling another rinse in cold water for a few minutes. Finally, all that’s left to do is let it dry naturally. Place your garment on a clean towel and lay it flat or hang it up, depending on the garment’s material and design.
