The first step is to apply a pre-treater solution to stained area. Look for an enzyme-based detergent and read the instructions for application. Fill a bowl with cool water and a few drops of pre-treater, then submerge the stained area of scarf into solution. Allow it to soak for about 15 minutes, then blot the stain with a dry cloth.
Once you've applied the pre-treater and blotted the stain, rinse the scarf in cold water. Avoid using warm or hot water as this can set the stain. Gently swish the scarf in the water and then press it out to remove excess water.
The final step is to launder the scarf in the washing machine. Only use mild detergents such as Woolite or all-purpose detergent. Be sure to use cold water and choose a gentle cycle. Once wash cycle is finished, tumble dry on low heat.
Barbecue sauce stains do not have to ruin your favorite scarves. With these three steps, you can easily remove the stubborn stains from scarves and make them look like new. It's always a good idea to test the pre-treater on a small area of scarf before applying it to entire stain.
