Pre-Soak the Item

Merino is a delicate fabric, so before you begin tackling stain, it’s best to pre-soak the item in cold water as this can help to reduce strength of the stain. Depending on the type of garment, you can either add item to a sink full of cool water or place it into a large bowl.

Mix Your Detergent Solution

To make your stain removal solution, you’ll need a mild laundry detergent such as Woolite for Delicates – this type of detergent is gentle enough to use on Merino wool garments without damaging them. Create the mixture by combining two tablespoons of laundry detergent with one quart of warm water, stirring until it’s completely dissolved.

Submerge Item in the Mixture

Make sure item is totally submerged in detergent solution. Allow it to soak for at least half an hour, and if stain is particularly stubborn, you may need to leave item in the solution for up to an hour.

Agitate the Stain

Once the soak time is up, it’s time to address the stain. Dip an old toothbrush into the mixture and gently agitate the stained area. You’ll be able to watch as the stain gradually begins to fade away. Don’t use too much force here, as vigorous scrubbing can damage the fabric.

Rinse and Repeat

Once the stain has gone, rinse the item in cold water and check to see if all of the sauce has been removed. If some residue remains, repeat the process until the stain has completely vanished. It’s important that you do not put the garment in a washing machine until you are sure there is no trace of the stain left.

Let the Item Air Dry

When you’re satisfied that the stain is gone, allow item to dry naturally. Do not put it in a dryer, as the heat can shrink and damage your garment.

Schedule Professional Cleaning

If you have a particularly persistent stain, it may be best to take the garment to a specialist dry cleaner as they are better equipped to deal with complex fabric cleaning. Make sure to mention to the attendant that the item is made from Merino wool, as this requires a different cleaning process.
