sauce

No matter how careful you are, spills and stains often happen when you’re least prepared. If you’ve found yourself at a family gathering with no way to avoid a sea of sticky-sweet BBQ sauce, here’s what you should do to minimize damage and remove BBQ sauce stains from your evening wear.

Step 1: Blot the Stain

Take a cloth napkin or paper towel and blot away as much of sauce from the surface of your dress as possible. Do not rub the fabric, as it may spread the stain. Instead, press firmly into the stain and dab fabric with the cloth.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Fabric

Combine a teaspoon of liquid detergent that does not contain enzymes, such as Woolite, with a cup of lukewarm water. Apply the mixture directly onto the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes. Do not rub or scrub as this could cause the BBQ sauce stain to set.

Step 3: Rinse Out the Stain

Using cold water, lightly rinse out the pre-treated area of the evening dress. Again, be sure not to scrub the fabric as this may lead to more damage.

Step 4: Take to the Laundry

If the BBQ sauce stain is still present after pre-treatment and rinsing, take your dress to the dry cleaners as soon as possible. Stains must be treated immediately in order to prevent them from setting and becoming difficult (or even impossible) to remove.
