The first step is to act quickly and blot up as much of the sauce as possible. The longer the sauce sits on the fabric, the more likely it is to stain. After blotting up the excess sauce, it’s time to move onto the next step: rinsing the fabric.

Run the fabric under cold water, making sure to rinse it from the back side of the fabric. This will help push stain away from the fabric fibers instead of pressing it deeper into fabric. When finished rinsing, gently squeeze out any excess water.

Once the fabric has been rinsed, you need to make a solution using two common household items. Begin by making a mixture of one part Dawn dishwashing liquid and two parts white vinegar. Apply solution directly to stained area and gently rub the material together. Allow the solution to sit on the fabric for at least five minutes.

After the fabric has been soaked in the mixture, you can begin to scrub the stained area with a damp sponge or cloth. Dip the cloth or sponge in a bucket of hot water and use a circular scrubbing motion. Be sure to only scrub the stained area and not the surrounding fabric. When finished, rinse the fabric with cold water and let it air dry.

If after these steps the stain still persists, you may want to take your shirt to a professional dry cleaner. A dry cleaner will have special solvents that can break down the stain faster and allow it to be removed without damage to the fabric.

With a few simple steps, you can now have your favorite button-down shirt looking like new again!
