The first step is to rinse out the stained area as soon as possible with cold water. Do not use hot water, as this will only set the stain further into the material. If the stain persists, do not worry. Several methods exist for removing stubborn barbecue sauce stains.

Soap and Water

Using plain soap and warm water, create a lather on stained area. Allow the lather to sit on the stain for a few minutes before blotting or wiping with a damp cloth. Repeat as necessary.

Oxygen-Based Cleaners

Oxygen-based cleaners, such as OxiClean or OxiClor Chlorinated Oxygen Cleaner, are effective at removing tough stains. First, mix 2 tablespoons of cleaner with 2 cups of warm water. Soak your garment in solution for 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water. If stain remains, repeat the process.

Vinegar and Water Solution

Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of water. Soak the stained area with the solution, then let air-dry in direct sunlight. The natural bleaching properties of vinegar should help lift the stain. If the stain remains, scrub gently with a toothbrush and liquid laundry detergent then rinse thoroughly.

Other Cleaning Products

If the stain still lingers, there are several other commercial cleaning products you can use. Pre-wash stain removers contain enzymes that break down the stain’s proteins so they can be easily washed away. You can also find laundry detergents specially formulated for removing barbecue sauce and other tough stains. Follow the instructions on label for the best results.

Preventative Measures

Finally, it is important to take some preventative measures when you are eating barbecue. Use napkins to clean your fingers after every few bites to avoid transferring sauces to your clothing. Wear an apron if you are grilling or serving food. Be sure to remove any stains as soon as possible for the best chance of success.
