If you've ever used a strip of adhesive tape on your windows, you know that the residue is hard to remove. If left alone, it can discolor your windows and detract from their appearance. You need to take proactive steps in order to clean adhesive tape stains.

Steps to Clean Adhesive Tape Stains

  • Use a razor blade to gently scrape off any excess bits of tape left behind. Move the blade in one direction and take care not to scratch the glass.
  • Mix a solution of 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part water in a spray bottle.
  • Spray the solution directly on the adhesive tape residue.
  • Wait at least two minutes for the solution to absorb into the adhesive.
  • Dampen a rag with warm water or a mild all-purpose cleaning solution and gently scrub away adhesive tape residue.
  • Wash off excess solution.
  • Rinse and dry the window completely and admire your handywork!

Depending on how long adhesive was on window, it may take a few repeats of these steps to completely remove the stain. Be patient and keep at it, and eventually you'll be successful.

What If the Stain Is Still There?

Some stubborn adhesive stains may prove too difficult to remove, no matter how hard you try with this method. In this case, you may find that a commercial glass cleaner is more effective than a DIY solution.

If the stain still won't budge, a professional glass cleaner may be able to help. They are experienced in removing even the most difficult adhesive stains and can do the job quickly and safely.
