When an adhesive tape is pressed onto a light-colored fabric, it may leave behind a visible discoloration. This is why many people are uncertain as to how to correctly remove these stains without causing further damage to the tie fabric.
If the stain is still fresh (i.e., it has not had time to set yet), use a soft cloth to carefully wipe away any excess tape residue. Be careful not to scrub too hard, as you may risk damaging the fabric.
Create a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts warm water. Soak a cloth or sponge in the solution before blotting stain gently. Be sure not to rub too hard, as this could cause stain to spread. Let solution sit for a few minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Once tie has been rinsed, inspect it closely for any remaining discoloration. If it is still visible, repeat steps 1–2.
If there is still a slight discoloration, put the tie in the washing machine with other whites, using mild detergent. If hand washing, use lukewarm water and mild detergent. Hang the tie up to dry afterward; avoid machine-drying, as this can sometimes cause fabric to shrink.
Once your white tie is completely dry, press out any wrinkles with an iron. Make sure iron is set to a low temperature.
