Before attempting any kind of cleaning solution, first try and remove as much of adhesive as possible. Use a spoon or blunt knife to scrape off residue — take care to not scratch the fabric. If the tape is difficult to remove, lay a cloth over it and place something hot, such as a hairdryer, on top of the cloth. This will help loosen up the tape so it can be more easily scraped away.
Once you’ve removed as much tape as you can, it’s time to examine the fabric. Different fabrics will require different cleaning solutions. For delicate fabrics, such as silk or wool, use a special store-bought product made for dry-cleaning. If the fabric is machine-washable, then pre-treat area with a stain remover before throwing the clothing in the washer.
If stain persists after pre-treating and washing, you may need to use a stronger solution. Make a paste using baking soda and water and dab it onto the area with an old toothbrush. This should help get rid of the stubborn marks. If the fabric is still stained, a mild dishwashing detergent may do the trick. Apply the soap to spot and allow it to sit for several minutes. Rinse the soap off and repeat until the stain is gone.
Once you’ve used the cleaning solutions, it’s important to dry the fabric properly. Place garment in the dryer on lowest setting. Adding a few towels to load will help absorb any remaining stains and prevent them from setting in.
By following this simple guide, you can get rid of adhesive tape stains and keep your favorite Tommy Hilfiger clothing looking like new.
