Quick Remedies for Adhesive Tape Stains on Sweaters

  • Rubbing alcohol: This is a common solution for removing adhesive residue. Soak a cloth in rubbing alcohol, dab the stain lightly and then use a second clean cloth to gently scrub the stain until it's gone.
  • Nail polish remover: Nail polish remover can be used to remove adhesive tape residue from sweaters as well. Apply a small amount of nail polish remover on a cotton ball and gently dab the stain. Make sure not to scrub or rub too hard, as this could cause damage to the fabric.
  • Vinegar: Vinegar is another great option for removing adhesive stains. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, and then soak a cloth in the mixture. Gently dab the cloth onto the stain until it's gone.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda is a great natural cleaning agent that can be used to remove adhesive stains from sweaters. Mix equal parts baking soda and water to create a paste-like substance. Dab the paste onto the stain and let it sit for about 10 minutes before wiping it off with a damp cloth.
  • Lint roller: If the adhesive stains are dried, a lint roller can be used to easily remove them. Simply roll the lint roller over the stained area until all of the residue is removed.

Tips to Prevent Adhesive Tape Stains on Sweaters

  • Use painter’s tape instead of regular adhesive tape—it’s less likely to leave behind residue.
  • Be mindful of where you place tape on your sweater. Avoid sensitive areas such as collars, cuffs and pockets.
  • When using tape on your sweater, make sure to take it off as soon as you can. The longer you leave it on, the more likely it is for the adhesive residue to sink in and leave a stain.
  • If you have to leave the tape on for a long period of time, cover area with a piece of fabric to protect it from any adhesive stains.
