Tape can be a handy office tool, but when it’s left on clothes, it can cause some major headaches. Removing adhesive tape from a delicate material like silk shantung can seem intimidating but fear not, it just takes a few simple steps to get rid of the tape and stain.

What You'll Need

  • Lint roller
  • Scraper
  • White vinegar
  • Soft toothbrush
  • Cotton swabs
  • Mild detergent
  • Washcloth

Step 1: Pick off as Much of the Tape as Possible

Gently try to peel off thin layers of the tape from your silk shantung using your fingers or tweezers. If there are pieces of the tape still stuck on the fabric, use a lint roller to attempt to remove them.

Step 2: Remove Any Remaining Residue

For areas that the tape residue is still clinging to, try to scrape them away using a scraper. Be gentle to avoid damaging the fabric but firm enough to loosen the residue. If the residue is still proving difficult to remove, soak a washcloth in white vinegar and apply it over the stain. Let it sit for about 10 minutes then use cloth to gently scrub the area until the residue is gone.

Step 3: Clean and Wash the Silk Shantung

Once you’ve removed all the tape residue, use a soft toothbrush and some mild detergent to lightly scrub the affected area. Finally, rinse fabric with lukewarm water and let it air dry before washing according to the care instructions. It may take a few tries to fully remove a sticky adhesive tape from your silk shantung, but the effort is worth it!
