Before tackling the stain, make sure that the fabric is safe to machine-wash or hand-wash. Check the care label on the garment and test a small area of the fabric with a bit of mild detergent and water. If the fabric colors bleed, then hand-washing is not an option and you’ll need to take the garment to a professional dry cleaner.
If the fabric is safe to machine-wash or hand-wash, start by treating the stain with a mild detergent mixed with cold or lukewarm water. Use a soft brush to gently scrub area for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water.
If stain persists, try using a commercial stain remover specifically designed to tackle adhesive tape residue. Pre-treat the area with the stain remover and let sit for several minutes, then rinse with cool water.
If the stain still remains, apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the area and let it sit for 5 minutes. Rinse with cool water and repeat the process if necessary. Make sure to test a small area of the fabric first to make sure it won’t damage the material.
White vinegar is also an effective way to remove sticky residue from garter. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water and apply to the stain. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Repeat the process until the stain has been removed.
Once the stain has been removed, you can machine-wash or hand-wash fabric according to the care instructions. Air dry the item and make sure there are no lingering stains before wearing.
